Some people see a divorce coming from a mile away. They know that things are not working out and this is going to be the end result. And then there are times when one person is caught off guard.
If your spouse asks for a divorce, if you were not expecting this, it can hit you like a load of bricks. Even so, you need to remain calm to ensure that you know exactly what is going on and which steps to take next.
Here are some of the many things you should do if you find yourself in this position:
- Remind yourself that you still have a future. Even if divorce will change your life forever, you still have a future that can bring you great joy. This thought will help you through the rough patches.
- Talk with those that you trust. From friends to family to a therapist, there is nothing wrong with sharing your feelings with others.
- Remember that it’s not all your fault. Even if you are being blamed by your partner for the divorce, keep in mind that marriage is a two way street. Don’t let anybody tell you it’s all your fault.
- Keep in mind that everything can be worked out. Matters of child support, child custody, and property division can be all be worked out in some way.
If your spouse has requested a divorce, it is time to better understand what will happen next. This will ensure that you are ready for anything that comes your way during this difficult time.
